Québec Tobacco-Free Week, which will take place from January 17 to 23, 2010, is all about second-hand smoke and how to quit smoking. With its slogan “With love from me - a smoke-free world”, it invites the smokers, former smokers and non-smokers alike to take a simple step by writing a personal message of encouragement to a co-worker, family member or friend who is either trying to quit smoking or wanting to protect other people from second-hand smoke.
Every single person is also invited to express their hope for a smoke-free world by using different coloured adhesive (Post-it) notes to create a work of art. Those who would like to share their achievement with the general public can do so by submitting a photograph of their creation via the website smokefreeworld.ca. The “Action” page of the site contains plenty of other suggestions for activities during the campaign, along with information on the problem of smoking, the resources available to help you quit, and suggestions to encourage youngsters not to start smoking.
We wish you a happy Québec Tobacco-Free Week!

Québec Tobacco-Free Week – 2010 Edition
Post your hope for a smoke-free world
“With love from me – a smoke-free world” is the slogan chosen for Québec Tobacco-free Week, which will be held from January 17 to 23, 2010. This year’s campaign invites the entire population – smokers, former smokers and non-smokers alike – to take a simple step by writing a personal message of encouragement to a co-worker, family member or friend. The purpose of this is to underscore the efforts of people who are trying to quit smoking, those who have already done so, and those who try not to expose their friends and family to second-hand smoke.
“The reason I’m reasserting my hope for a smoke-free world is that one Quebecer in every five still smokes, and one young adult (20-24 years old) in every three is still addicted to tobacco. I’ll also be using self-adhesive (Post-it) notes to convey my commitment to the people I love,” says actress Mireille Deyglun, who needed no persuasion to become the campaign spokesperson once again this year.
The campaign, with its focus on second-hand smoke and how to quit smoking, also encourages the general public to use its imagination by creating a work of art out of different coloured adhesive (Post-it) notes, on a wall at the office, at home or in the car. Those who wish can send a photograph of their creation to be displayed on the smokefreeworld.ca website. The official campaign website also includes a blog on current issues relating to the fight against tobacco, and invites users to submit their comments. Virtual notes can be sent via the site, which contains a host of information on smoking and support resources, as well as suggestions for encouraging children not to start smoking and helping friends and family members to overcome their addiction if they are smokers.
Well-known personalities
During Québec Tobacco-Free Week, the major television networks will be broadcasting messages from well-known personalities. Their messages can also be viewed on the campaign website.
Québec Tobacco-Free Week is coordinated by the Quebec Council on Tobacco and Health, a non-profit agency, in collaboration with Quebec’s Ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux and more than 180 partner organizations.

Québec Tobacco-Free Week – 2010 Edition
Display your hope for a smoke-free world
“Everyone – smokers, former smokers and non-smokers alike – can take advantage of the awareness campaign to reassert their hope for a smoke-free world. A simple, fun and loving way of doing this is to use an adhesive (Post-it) note to write a personal message for a friend, family member or co-worker. You can also create a work of art using different coloured notes, either at home or at the office” says actress Mireille Deyglun, who needed no persuasion to become the campaign spokesperson once again this year.
The idea behind this year’s campaign is to raise public awareness of the impacts of second-hand smoke for health, to provide information on the resources available to help quit smoking, and to display the hope for a smoke-free world using adhesive (Post-it) notes. Québec Tobacco-Free Week, with its slogan “With love from me – a smoke-free world”, will be held from January 17 to 23, 2010. Its aim is to underscore the efforts of people who are trying to quit smoking, those who have already done so, and those who try not to expose their friends and family to second-hand smoke.
